Produce friction materials for your industrial applications
Friction materials have numerous industrial applications, in particular in the manufacturing of parts used in means of transport: automotive, rail, aeronautical industries… They can be found in clutch discs, brake pads…
There are two main categories of friction materials: organic and sintered.
Organic friction materials have 3 groups of constituents: binders (thermoplastic resin such as phenolic resin making up the organic matrix), reinforcement fibers (mineral, metallic and organic – aramid fibers) and various extenders (solid lubricant, abrasive particles, metal particles).
Sintered friction materials contain about ten different constituents in powder form (copper, bronze, ceramics, graphite…) but no binder.
Sintering, which is a high temperature compression process, bonds the various particles.
The manufacturing of these friction materials requires the powders to be mixed prior to compacting and heating.
Our MIB intensive blade mixers are highly suited to these operations and their performance and robust design makes them extremely effective production tools. Moreover, our range of solutions to enhance protection against vessel and mixing tool wear have been developed specifically for the mixing of abrasive materials.

The friction material manufacturing process may also require drying operations.
Our MIB Dry-Tech vacuum mixer dryer has been designed to meet these specific requirements. Evaporation temperatures are much lower when a vacuum is created in the vessel so composites containing heat-sensitive materials can be dried without causing reactions or modifying their properties. Another benefit is the reduction of energy consumed for the drying process.
